Palmyra Ag Science Receives $25,000 Monsanto Grant

District OR 1 School Ag Science program is just one of the many success stories of the Grow Rural Education program. To qualify for a Grow Rural Education grant, school districts had to be nominated by farmers in eligible counties to compete for a merit-based grant of either $10,000 or $25,000. Nominated school districts then submitted a grant application describing their STEM-focused project. The program’s Farmer Advisory Council, consisting of approximately 30 farmer leaders from across the country with an interest in agriculture and education, reviewed the finalist applications and selected the winning school districts, including District OR 1 Ag Science Program “The America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education program works with farmers to help make their local communities a better place by preparing their students for successful careers,” said Al Mitchell, Monsanto Fund president. “The schools we’ve worked with tell us that the grants they receive through the Grow Rural Education program have real results. In many cases, students seem more excited and interested in what they’re learning and the programs funded by these grants have resulted in higher student engagement in STEM.” • R*W*I*G*H*T way for District OR1- Robotics and Welding Integration for Gainful Hands on Technology. District OR1 school wants to move to the next level in welding, industrial technology, math and art curriculum offerings to provide math and technology skills for employment in metal fabrication, industry processes, engineering and design. Integrating a CNC plasma Cutting System into our welding technology, math and art program curriculum will offer a real world manufacturing tool to teach Computer Aided Drafting software and Computer Numeric Control operations for the next generation of employability skills. The sharing of curriculum between the Industrial tech, Welding, Math and Art instructors will reinforce STEM skills to students that are needed in preparation for technology careers to produce, build or repair the required machinery, buildings and equipment for the future infrastructure, conserving natural resources, producing sustainability and design appreciation for agriculture and our society. • Since the Grow Rural Education program began in 2011, the program has awarded more than $16 million in grants to rural public school districts. • Thanks to the local farmers who nominated District OR1 for the grant application. • #GrowRuralEd
